Nested Observer Window is a real-time AI simulation of the Nested Observer Window (NOW) model of consciousness by Justin Riddle and Jonathan Schooler. The model describes consciousness as a nested hierarchy of windows, each one integrating the windows beneath it, like a photomosaic in which every pixel is itself an image.
The simulation gives this hierarchy a visual form. Following Schooler's three dimensions of time, the windows behave like the sails of tethered kites: they all move forward through clock time together, while each one shifts on its own through subjective time and alternative timelines.
The work grew out of a collaboration with the META Lab in Psychological & Brain Sciences at UC Santa Barbara and was presented at a Berggruen Institute workshop.
