A biophilic design intervention in a neglected, dense urban area of Nea Chora, Chania. The Abea factory holds a significant place in the cultural and industrial history of the city. It belongs to the olive soap industry of Chania and ranks among its first industrial sites. The building still stands, and nature embraces its passage through time.
The proposal treats the vegetation the site already holds as the starting ground of the design. It enriches it and creates an urban forest in the heart of the old city, adding canopy, shade and public green space to a dense district.
The design gives back access to the sea, as the site had originally. All new uses for alternative tourism blend seamlessly with the ground and take the sea as their extension. Visitors relive the industrial atmosphere of the factory together with the passage of time and the reclaim of nature.
